ABSTRACT

Environmental ethics is a relatively new field, originating in the 1970s. Nevertheless, it has led to the publication of major journals, Environmental Ethics and Environmental Values, as well as numerous books on the subject. This entry introduces the reader to the essential concepts and arguments, and offers a brief update about how environmental ethicists use a variety of different philosophical approaches in response to emerging issues and trends, such as adaptation to global climate change. One of the major changes in the field is a greater emphasis on linking environmental ethics to public policies. This entry provides a short bibliography of key books and articles for those who want to pursue the topic further.
