ABSTRACT

Does the Middle East suffer from pervasive corruption? This entry provides an in-depth analysis of the concept of corruption and its measurement, and connects this to the study of corruption in the Middle East. The main theme of the entry is that although there is a lack of raw data on the subject, a structural analysis, supported by indicative materials and recent developments (“the Arab Spring”), indicate x that there is a serious problem of corruption in the area. Corruption has played a key role in the development of the region in recent years and it may play a significant role in the near future.
