ABSTRACT

Mixing of solids is essential to many industries, including pharmaceuticals, ceramics, metallurgy, chemicals, food, cosmetics, coal, and plastics. This entry presents an example-oriented overview of current understanding of mixing and segregation mechanisms that are of importance to powder blending operations. A particular focus is placed on industrial tumbler designs, which simultaneously comprise the bulk of solids blending operations and represent the systems for which predictive modeling appears to have the greatest potential.
