ABSTRACT

Over the past decades, the nasal route has been gaining much attention as a non-invasive alternative for systemic delivery of various classes of drugs. That is because the nasal route has one of the most permeable and highly vascularized mucosa, which would potentiate rapid absorption of drugs and quick onset of its therapeutic effect. This entry presents general information on the nasal delivery of peptide and protein drugs, including physiological aspects of the nasal tissue, key factors influencing nasal drug absorption, an overview of experimental systems for nasal drug absorption, and major strategies for improving the nasal delivery of peptide and protein drugs.
