ABSTRACT
Hydrogels are three-dimensional and hydrophilic polymer networks capable of swelling up in water or biological fluids. They are also capable of retaining large amounts of fluid in their swollen state. This entry reviews the synthesis and properties of hydrogels, their biomedical applications, and their role in drug delivery systems.
