Devices for self-injection, chiefly pens and autoinjectors used for the subcutaneous delivery of biopharmaceuticals, constitute a growing segment of the world of drug delivery devices. This entry reviews the different types of devices for self-injection, outlines some of the drivers for further development, and describes some factors of particular relevance to this class of medical devices. It begins with a brief review of the history of pens and injector devices then moves to examining their development trends and drivers.
