ABSTRACT
Super disintegrants are semi-synthetic or synthetic excipients designed to promote rapid breakdown of oral solid dosage forms to aid dissolution in vivo. In orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs), they promote rapid disintegration and dispersion of the tablet in the mouth once it comes into contact with saliva. This entry first reviews general chemistry and surface morphology and then moves to a discussion of disintegrant action and the factors affecting disintegrant activity.
