ABSTRACT

The nutrients supplied to an aquatic system is the most important factor that determines the species and amount of plant material, which in turn controls available oxygen and the animal species that thrive.[1]

As plants and macrophytes grow and die, organic matter accumulates on the lake bottom. Decomposition of excessive amounts of organic matter can consume available oxygen and create anoxic conditions. An anoxic condition drives away plant and animal species dependent on oxygen. Slowly a lake’s original community changes.
