ABSTRACT

In the early 1980s the term "civil society" (CS) turned into a "user friendly" theoretical tool, gaining great attention from scholars and practitioners alike. Known variously as "Non-profit," "Voluntary," "Third Sector," and "Non-government Organizations (NGO)," civil society organizations (CSO) are operating outside the confines of the market and the state. This set of institutions provide a middle way between sole reliance on the market (the "second sector") and sole reliance on the state (the "first sector").
