ABSTRACT
This chapter explores models and applications of interactive expert systems (ES) and multimedia (MM), hypermedia (HM), and intellimedia (IM) —the latter being an advanced intelligent media concept identified by the author. It purposes MM is defined as the computer-facilitated integration of multiple information formats. The chapter discusses and applications surveys indicate that ES/MM integration offers opportunities to produce innovative applications that should appeal to a large number of users. Additional media technologies to be combined with ES include HM and IM, the latter being a new concept of intelligent MM. For discussion purposes, the structure of an ES is divided by a dashed line between the development and consultation environments. A background of media technologies and integration advantages is first presented, followed by a description of software architectures, integration orientations, and an evolving framework of system integration models. The translational form is a variation of separate system development and use.
