ABSTRACT

The US military is an extraordinarily complex organization. This chapter describes the US military’s artificial intelligence program, including a comparison of the different ways the services implement their programs. It presents a series of expert systems applications. The chapter presents the military’s vision of expert systems as the military enters the 21st century. The expert system component encodes the knowledge of the building’s pre-collapse structure and deduces likely locations of void spaces. For much of the 1990s, various military organizations have looked to simulation and distance education technologies to offset tuition costs. Because of its numerous successes in expert systems applications, the military has invested heavily in expert systems research. Quality of Life concerns are very important and very peculiar to the military vs. the corporate world. Military education will make greater use of intelligent tutorials with Internet-based collaborative systems in order to reduce travel costs and provide quality education to all its soldiers, sailors, and airmen.
