ABSTRACT

As project development worker for Unlocking Potential in London, this chapter describes a work in providing peer support to young African and Caribbean men who have mental health issues and want to move on in the areas of training and ‘real’ work. Low expectations in the mental health system contribute too, as does the benefits system. Mental health services are based on fear instead of potential and the new Mental Health Bill plays to that same tune. High dosages of medication mean that many people will not move into work because the side effects make them unable to stand being in any kind of work environment. Designing marketing material and therefore building a strong identity was important for establishing Unlocking Potential in London, in order to give it street credibility. There is a feasible alternative to what mental health services currently do.
