ABSTRACT

Like other psychosocial interventions, employment interventions are largely context specific. There are many other factors that affect whether people with mental health problems are able to get back to work and no specific intervention can be implemented or evaluated without taking these into consideration. This chapter reviews the research literature, giving due weight to evidence from authoritative and systematic reviews but also including some relatively well-contextualised information from other studies of occupational interventions in mental healthcare. It therefore gives some space to descriptive and evaluative studies that can help readers to understand more fully the range of interventions operating, the variables investigated and the areas where promising results are emerging or where questions remain and further research is indicated. Training and education includes interventions that are primarily educational as well as those that are employment-oriented to a greater or lesser degree.
