ABSTRACT

Mounting equipment procurement is a simpler task. The first item on any list should be insect pins in sufficient quantities. Another aspect of mounting specimens is the use of microscope slides for mounting fragments and mammalian hairs. There is also a variety of mounting media, clearing and preservation fluids to be considered when doing microscopic mounts. Some stains may also be desired to accent certain features. Many of the formulations that may be used in making microanalytical mounting fluids can be found in the references listed in the bibliography. The primary method of mounting adult, hard-bodied insects is by direct pinning. The appropriate size insect pin is pushed through the insect itself, to a predetermined height, with the aid of a pinning block. Labeling is an important part of mounting. These labels carry all the identification information, such as genus and species, date and place collected, collector and who identified the specimen.
