ABSTRACT

Introduction Bleeding complications in cancer patients may be due to cancer or to anticancer treatment; they may be life-threatening and should be adequately recognized and treated.

Overall, the most common cause of hemorrhage in cancer patients is thrombocytopenia (50%). Thrombocytopenia may be the result of treatment with chemotherapy or bone marrow involvement by cancer, but it can also be caused by consumptive coagulopathy, immune-mediated mechanisms, infection or sequestration.
