ABSTRACT
It is probably fair to say that the development and wide commercial availability of the confocal microscope have been one of the most significant advances in light microscopy in the recent past. The main reason for the popularity of these instruments derives from their ability to permit the structure of thick specimens of biological tissue to be investigated in three dimensions by resorting to a scanning approach together with a novel (confocal) optical system.
