ABSTRACT
Surgery is rooted in a basic inherent conflict. The Hippocratic Oath commands surgeons to abstain from whatever causes harm to the patient, yet the essence of surgery is to invade the body — and therefore to inflict injury. The majority of all surgical research has focused on techniques that alter the balance between improving the lot of the patient suffering from disease and minimizing the mortality and morbidity attendant on the therapeutic act.
