Reactive distillation (RD) consists of an integrated multifunctional reactor in which a chemical reaction and distillation occur simultaneously in a single-unit operation apparatus. The reaction can be catalyzed either homogeneously or] The subset of heterogeneously catalyzed reactive distillation processes is commonly referred to as catalytic distillation processes. This technology of integrating reactors and separators has made enormous progress since it was first reported by Backhaus [1].
