ABSTRACT

In the design of any emission control system, the first consideration should be whether it is possible to prevent the emission in the first place. As an example, for methyl tertiarybutyl ether (MTBE), source control can be achieved for sensitive water bodies by fuel substitution, as has been practiced for recreational watercraft activities at Lake Tahoe and at other California drinking water reservoirs, or by improving storage (underground tanks and piping leak detection) and filling systems (spill control).
