ABSTRACT

Calcium Aluminate Cement (CAC) is not a new product, having been invented in the early l900’s. This type of cement nevertheless has some unique properties that are suited to applications in both mining and civil engineering industries. Needs within the South African mining industry have led to the development of Calcium Aluminate Cement-based concretes that can be applied either by casting or by wet or dry process shotcrete. Some practical applications are examined in this paper where Calcium Aluminate Cementbased shotcretes were used because of a specific requirement for one of the following properties: abrasion and impact resistance, rapid hardening, corrosion resistance, or heat resistance. Recent laboratory tests to determine the resistance of cementitious-based products to abrasion and impact are discussed, and the cost effectiveness of available options are evaluated.
