ABSTRACT

Molecular sequence data and analyses accumulated since the 1995 Brachiopod Congress have confirmed most of the 18S rDNA gene tree results presented there, including the protostome, lophotrochozoan affinities and monophyly of articulate and inarticulate brachiopods with phoronids, and the separateness of ectoprocts. In this paper, new or amended 18S gene tree results are described for: Anakinetica, Argyrotheca, Kraussina, Lacazella, Magellania spp. Megathiris, Neothyris lenticularis, Platidia and Thecidellina. Contrary to earlier reports, the molecular relationships of thecideidines are now unresolved. Work remains in progress on these and other aspects of molecular phylogeny, including measurement of the upward bias of earlier, restriction fragment length, polymorphism-based assays of mitochondrial genome divergence between east and west Atlantic samples of Terebratulina spp.
