ABSTRACT

If a child has been abducted, how would a police officer know where sex offenders live in the area of the abduction? What patterns of robbery are occurring on a patrol beat? A citizen is complaining about gunfire, noise, and speeding cars; what tools can be used to address these complaints? Traditionally, police officers have relied on reams of printouts and text lists of information. Now crime mapping is replacing lists, making it easier to solve crime and enhance community policing. GIS-based crime mapping is a great way to visualize overall community problems.
