ABSTRACT

The recorded crime data for Sheffield covered calendar year 19952 and was provided by the South Yorkshire Police. This amounted to linked details of over 70,000 offences, involving 54,000 complainants (victims) and 8,000 known or suspected offenders. The three datasets were geo-coded to enable us to link them spatially to a base-map of every residence which in England

has a unique postal code; the location of an offence, the home address of any victims and, if known, the home address of responsible offenders. The geo-coded data was supplemented by a series of interviews with local burglars and car thieves to both test the geo-coded data and add explanatory value to the analysis results.
