ABSTRACT

Here, we summarize the presence and prevalence of different parasites and parasitic infections in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Helminthic infections such as pinworm and protozoal infections caused by Giardia intestinalis and Toxoplasma gondii are prevalent. Other parasites appear to infect mainly the immunosuppressed (e.g. Microsporidia and Pneumocystis carinii ). Immigrants and travellers bring into the country parasites of the south but there are no known cases where transmission has been established. The most common infestations yet are those caused by arthropods such as gnats, mosquitoes, and ticks during the relatively warm summers but they are not included in this chapter.
