ABSTRACT

The length of vegetation period, based on the type of flower initiation seems to be the major ground in distinguishing two ecotypes, the biennial and the annual types (Carum carvi f. biennis and f. annua). While the biennial type is indigenous through Europe and had been known here since centuries, first experiences on the annual type can be dated back only to the beginning of the seventies this century. The European populations may have an Egyptian origin, where this type is well known and produced regularly.
