ABSTRACT

Caraway has been grown as a spice plant for many centuries and is almost cosmopolitan. It is native to Europe, parts of Asia and northern Africa, but it is grown also in the northern US and Canada. Caraway seeds technically are halffruits, the whole fruit being a schizocarp which comprises two distinct halves (‘mericarps’) which each contain one seed. We will use ‘seed’ where we refer to the agricultural product (half fruit) and ‘fruit’ when we refer to the entire schizocarp (containing two seeds).
