ABSTRACT

We have been interested in nutritional modulation of renal injury for many years (Clark et al., 1989; Clark et al., 1990; Clark et al., 1991; Holub et al., 1991; Clark et al., 1993a; Clark et al., 1993b; Clark and Parbtani, 1994; Tomobe et al., 1994; Ogborn and Sareen, 1995; Ogborn et al., 1998a). This interest has led us to study dietary flaxseed and flax oil in the remnant nephron experimental model of renal injury (Ingram et al., 1995), as well as flaxseed and its derived lignan in lupus nephritis (Hall et al., 1993; Clark et al., 1995; Clark et al., 2000; Clark et al., 2001) and flaxseed and flax oil in experimental polycystic kidney disease (Ogborn et al., 1998b; Ogborn et al., 1999). We have had the opportunity of carrying out a series of experiments in the three different domains; i.e., primary progressive renal disease, secondary vasculitis [lupus] and classic polycystic kidney disease.
