ABSTRACT

Railways were the first form of mechanized transport. While the first trains ran on tracks at relatively low speeds and were limited in number to one train on a track, obviously no need existed, at that time, to present information to the train driver. There were no other trains to run into and no way for the vehicles to exceed the maximum cornering speeds for the track. Unfortunately, with an increase in rail vehicle traffic, engine power, speed, and network complexity, accidents began occurring; this led to the development of the first safety rules, procedures, and signage.
