ABSTRACT

This book contains 14 chapters on human factors aspects of nuclear safety. As far as possible, the main subject areas have been covered. As can be seen from the coverage of topics introduced by Welch and O’Hara (Chapter 2), who cite ten requirements in their human factor engineering program review model, all of these are covered. These ten elements together with pointers to the relevant chapters are shown in Table 16.1

Obviously, the enormity of the topic means that further reading will be necessary to gain an in-depth knowledge of the topic area. The references at the end of each chapter direct this reading. However, this book provides a good overview of human factors issues in nuclear safety. A content analysis of the chapters reveals seven key topics in the book, comprising: design and evaluation methodologies, safety, problems, selection and training, simulation, validation, and human performance. These topics may be related to the three main issues put forward in the introduction, organisational issues, personnel issues and design issues. The key topics are shown in Figure 16.1.
