ABSTRACT
The pipeline industry is critically important in all countries that produce and transport oil/gas and liquid chemical products. It is also a potentially dangerous industry because it comprises high-energy containment systems, failures of which can lead to casualties, pollution of the environment, and great economic
losses. Pipelines may also be prime targets for a terrorist attack. Pipeline companies must therefore have a comprehensive, sophisticated maintenance system in place, utilizing the best of current science and technology. Such maintenance systems provide for pipeline integrity while also providing the added benefit of driving down the overall expenses.
