ABSTRACT

The macroergonomic analysis of structure (MAS) method combines empirically developed analytical models of the effect of three major sociotechnical system elements-the technological subsystem, personnel subsystem, and relevant external environment-on the fourth major element, the structure of the organization’s work system. Through the analysis of the key characteristics of these three sociotechnical system elements, the basic design of the work system’s structure for effective functioning can be determined. The MAS analysis results then can be compared with the existing structure of a given organization’s work system to identify discrepancies for correction. The model’s results not only aid in identifying discrepancies, but also provide guidance on what to do to correct them for more optimal work-system functioning. This, in turn, sets the stage for the related analysis and refinement of the work system’s processes.
