ABSTRACT

The event-based approach to training (EBAT) is used to guide the design of scenario-or simulation-based training. It is usually incorporated into a training program encompassing information, demonstration, practice, and feedback, in which EBAT would be used to structure the practice and feedback portion. There are a number of variations of EBAT, but all seek to engineer training opportunities by systematically identifying and introducing events within training exercises that provide known opportunities to observe behaviors that have been targeted for training. Explicit links are maintained between training objectives, exercise design, performance assessment, and historical performance data, focusing training on the objectives and producing standardized training opportunities. While the methodology is generic and can be applied to train many types of skills in many types of contexts, the training products produced are highly context specific.
