ABSTRACT

Pharmacological agents may impair carbohydrate metabolism through excessive body weight gain (BWG) and obesity The medical community’s interest in this issue increased considerably after 1990, with the introduction of the atypical antipsychotic drugs (APDs) into clinical practice. Some atypical APDs often cause obesity and glucose dysregulation. After an overview of the general topic of drug-induced glucose dysregulation; the effects of APDs on body weight (BW); and the association of these agents with the development of DM, current treatment and research perspectives will be reviewed.
