ABSTRACT

According to Hippocrates (400 B.C.), the obese should “eat less and exercise more.” These past recommendations still form the basis of obesity therapy today and are likely to persist in the foreseeable future. Irrespective of the specific nature of the multitude of diet and exercise therapies advocated over the past decades, the prognosis of treatment remains poor. It is difficult for most individuals to stick to the hardship of dietary regimens and compliance in sustaining regular exercise is poor. The result is generally a transient phase of weight loss (or weight stability) followed by a return, within a few years, to the trajectory towards obesity.
