ABSTRACT

The Argonne region, situated in the northeast of France (Figure 21.1), was an important center of Roman pottery production in northwestern Europe. Today it is a quiet area with abundant forest (covering about 50% of the region), but during the First World War it was the stage for fierce frontline fighting between the German and French forces. Numerous trenches are still present in the area, and the remains of ammunition, barbed wire, and weapons can be found on many fields.
