ABSTRACT

Though only cinnamon (C. verum) and cassias (Chinese, Indonesian and Indian) are of commercial importance, there are other species that yield aromatic oils and are of local importance, both as spice and as an ingredient of local medicine. The types of spices and herbs used by the forest tribes and local people, are often known only by them. Cinnamomum is a large genus and consists of around 450 species, and many of them may have some localised use. Little is known about these species, although some have been studied in more detail. The following is a brief consideration of those species with economic value, other than the cinnamon and cassias.
