ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the basic concepts of data representation, interpretation, and analysis with an introduction of basic statistical concepts. Resolution of the conflict required patient explanation of the concept of significant figures and the realistic precision one can expect in the measurement and delivery of intravenous fluids. In the use of exponents, a number is expressed as an integer multiplied by 10 with the appropriate exponent. As with exponentials, students should be familiar with important laws of logarithms. Summarizing data in a manner that allows rapid assimilation of key relationships is often best accomplished through graphical representation of data. The objective of differential calculus is to determine the value of the derivative. Assessment of the validity of any statistical analysis must, therefore, begin with a determination of whether or not these assumptions are met by the data set being analyzed.
