ABSTRACT
This article examines motivations for home schooling in Indonesia and compares them with the different researches in the United States where various aspects of home schooling have been explored extensively. Evidence includes a qualitative interview with Center for the Development of Early Childhood Education and Community Education officer in West Java and document analysis found in published books and online news and articles. Previous studies identified two distinct groups of home schoolers: ideologues and pedagogues. The findings suggest that most families in this study expressed motivation distinctions between the ideologue-pedagogue dichotomy for starting home schooling. However, contrary to findings from previous research, a finding shows a mixture of both ideological and pedagogical reasons for practising homeschooling.
