ABSTRACT
It is virtually mandatory that a description of Unix begin with a brief history of the system. Part of the rationale for such a beginning is that the history is a significant part of the Unix culture and the Unix mystique. It can also be helpful, since an understanding of the evolution of Unix can sometimes help to make Unix commands seem less cryptic.
