ABSTRACT

Forty-two nuclear power plants are in commercial operation and 11 plants are currently under construction in Japan, as of July 1993. The spent fuels of the power reactors are subjected to the reprocessing to recover plutonium and unfissioned uranium. China has decided to reprocess the spent fuels from nuclear reactors. Therefore, much attention is paid to the separation of the fuel-reprocessing wastes. The dramatic economic growth of the Republic of Korea has been accompanied by rapid increase in electricity demand, with nuclear power having assumed a key role in meeting this demand. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) is responsible for all nuclear related Research and Development and has been designated to carry out the radioactive waste management projects. Liquid radioactive waste from research laboratories at KAERI is to be treated at the radioactive waste treatment facility.
