ABSTRACT

The paper presents a safety management approach based upon the potential of the Operability and Hazard Analysis method. It relates the method to the general principles of interdisciplinary team approaches and distributed control. It draws analogies with the concepts and methods of the Total Quality Assurance management system.

The paper addresses the philosophy of the approach. The principles and characteristics are presented and exemplified by reference to real life applications. The applications are taken from the author’s experience in operations and project safety engineering and in safety engineering education.
