ABSTRACT

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) receives reports from the states with primary enforcement responsibility of all violations of the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWR) and these violations are incorporated into the Federal Reporting Data System (FRDS). In addition to information on violations, quarterly reports are submitted to EPA on the basic characteristics of public water systems such as population served, source of supply, and treatment, which is called the inventory of public water systems and is also incorporated into FRDS. Since the passage of the original Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) in 1974, the United States EPA has tracked the compliance by public water supply systems with the NPDWR. Of the national total of 58,557 community water systems, 56,544 were in total compliance. The final area of compliance deals with monitoring and reporting for chem/rads. The most frequently violated contaminants were combined radium, with 164 significant noncompliers, and fluoride, with 159.
