ABSTRACT

The proper recognition, adhesion, and signal transduction between cells is of fundamental importance to the development and maintenance of tissue form and function. It had been observed for some time in a multitude of developing systems that individual cells have the capability of sorting out and adhering specifically with appropriate partners. Although a number of molecules that mediate cell-to-cell adhesion have been identified, 1 one of the first to be identified as fundamental during embryonic development is the neural cell adhesion molecule, N-CAM.
