ABSTRACT

Neoplasms of the soft tissue are relatively infrequent in the nasal cavities of cattle and sheep. They include a variety with their origins from connective tissues, blood vessels, and lymphatics. Neoplasia of nasal passages and paranasal sinuses is characterized by insidious onset, protracted clinical course, and resistance to most forms of therapy. Enzootic ethmoidal tumors of the nasal cavity of cattle had been reported in Sweden as an endemic condition as far back as 1909 and in Norway. The transmission experiments, the emphasis moved towards trials to isolate the causative viral agents in cattle and sheep and to characterize the agents. Neoplastic cells from tumor tissues were cocultured with goat turbinate or sheep choroid plexus cell cultures. Diagnosis of ethmoidal tumors in cattle and sheep is tentatively done by the history, i.e., if the animals are in endemic areas, clinical signs should be interpreted with care.
