ABSTRACT

Cancer of the maxillary sinus is one of the most difficult tumors of the head and neck to treat and the prognosis is poor. Sakai treated 561 cases between 1957 and 1973 in Osaka. Sakai observed that more than 80% of patients with cancer of the maxillary sinus had a medical history of chronic maxillary sinusitis, or had active signs of the disease in another sinus. A case-control study was carried out in 1978 to investigate the relationship between chronic maxillary sinusitis and maxillary sinus cancer. Medical records of cases and controls were reviewed to calculate the frequencies of those who had a previous history of chronic maxillary sinusitis and of those who showed active signs of chronic maxillary sinusitis by anterior rhinoscopy and nasal X-ray examination. Although all of the cohort subjects were examined with the anterior rhinoscope and nasal X-ray at diagnosis, a histological examination was not given to everyone.
