ABSTRACT

A large number of land use–transport interaction (LUTI) models are currently available in the literature for research and practical planning purposes. Different authors have proposed classifications, which group different models according to different criteria. The chapter gives an overview of the criteria to classify LUTI models. It reviews the most commonly known LUTI models that have been applied in a greater number of study areas. The chapter proposes a new classification of LUTI models based on those described beforehand but which combines the main theoretical paradigms developed in the field of LUTI modelling with their chronological evolution. Many LUTI models are still based on the classic four-stage sequential approach, which has led many authors to recommend the use of more modern models whether they are endogenous or exogenous to the rest of the LUTI simulator.
