Since rocks consist of mineral grains and crystals, their magnetization arises from those mineral constituents present which are measurably magnetic. The fraction of the total rock which has magnetic minerals may be only a few percent. Since it is this relatively small proportion and its chemical and physical state which determines the bulk magnetic properties and magnetization, two consequences result:
