ABSTRACT

Common carp originated in eastern Europe and central Asia. Farming of common carp started in European countries and Japan many centuries ago, and has been eventually introduced to other parts of the world. More than 85% of the carp production takes place in eastern Europe, and estimates indicate that production has doubled during the last decade to the current level of approximately 430,000 t in 1985, of which the USSR contributes more than 60%. Other major carp producing countries are Japan and Indonesia. 1
