ABSTRACT

This chapter details leading motivational theory and some practical motivational guidelines for the data center manager. By effectively administering consequences, data center managers can exert considerable influence over the behavior and productivity of their personnel. The most highly regarded motivational theories developed during the past 50 years include A. G. Maslow's need hierarchy, reinforcement, attribution theory, F. Herzberg's dual-factor theory, expectancy theory, and goal setting. Herzberg proposed a motivational theory based on dual factors that concern employees—hygiene and motivational factors. Hygiene factors are associated with company policy and administration, working conditions, salary, interpersonal relations, personal life, job security, and status. The chapter presents an effective and efficient method of identifying motivational issues for individual employees. It proposes strategies for administering and scheduling the factors as consequences of employee performance.
