ABSTRACT

Management of the processing work load growth requires recognizing the changes as an opportunity for the computer operations section and developing a strong microcomputer network management function as a part of the data center operation. The data center manager's experience with upgrading mainframe hardware in the traditional data center operation can apply well to the microcomputer environment. The growth in microcomputer technology can offer many benefits to those in the data center that make an effort to understand the technology and how to use it. The skills that make operations managers successful are exactly the skills required as the industry increasingly embraces microcomputer technology. The benefits of microcomputer use are less complexity, less cost, and the ability for nontechnical individuals to gain greater control of their data. Those benefits are offset by the greater difficulty in managing, coordinating, and controlling these new environments.
